Personal Narrative on Divorce :: Narrative Essay Marriage

It was the last Saturday in December of 1997. My sibling, sister, and I were pursuing each other all through the house. As we were running, our folks instructed us to come and plunk down in the front room. They needed to reveal to us something. Along these lines, we as a whole went down steps considering what was happening. When we as a whole got down steps, the three of us got onto the love seat. At that point, my mother stated, â€Å" Well†¦Ã¢â‚¬ â€Å"Your mother and I†¦Ã¢â‚¬ intruded on my dad. â€Å"Are getting a separation, † said my mom, finishing his sentence. I was five at that point, so I had no clue about what a separation was. I at that point posed a huge amount of inquiries. â€Å"What’s a remorse?† I inquired â€Å"Divorce,† remedied my more established sister, Jennifer, â€Å"D-I-V-O-R-C-E. Not regret, or whatever you said!† My mom at that point responded to my inquiry saying, â€Å"A separate is when†¦Ã¢â‚¬ I could see her eyes watering, â€Å"two wedded individuals don’t want...to be hitched anymore.† â€Å"Will we despite everything live here?† I inquired â€Å"No,† addressed my mom. â€Å"Will we ever observe Daddy again?† asked Jennifer. â€Å" Well obviously, † addressed my dad, â€Å"It’ll simply resemble I’m away for an exceptionally prolonged stretch of time. Y’all will see me each other weekend.† My more established sibling, Jonathan, was peaceful at that point. I think he hushed up in light of the fact that he was the just one of the three of us who genuinely realized what was happening. With me being at the young age of five, I was exceptionally confounded of what was happening. I believed that Jonathan, Jennifer, and I would live in a house by our selves and that both my folks would visit us from their different houses once in a while. A great many people would feel that I’m discouraged, yet I like to think about my parents’ separate as something constructive that has occurred in my life.

What Should We Know About War On Drugs - Free Essay Example

Four decades ago, the United States government announced a war on drugs. When the United States declared the war on drugs, they implemented that the use of marijuana, opium, coca, and psychedelics, that had previously been used for spiritual and medical use, were now illegal within the United States for recreational use. The United States has put in billions of dollars to budget the War on Drugs. To back up the United States claim that such drugs should be illegal, they have said that it is not only bad for the well-being of humans, but overall can take a toll on the human body. But even though those are major issues the United States have been tackling since the 1970s, these issues are far from being resolved. Drugs in the United States began surfacing in the 1800s. In 1806, Freidrich Serturner separated an organic alkaloid compound from resinous gum emitted by the opium poppy. He gave it the name morphine.  Ã‚   During the Civil War, thousands of soldiers who had been injured in combat, were given opium or morphine in field hospitals. Many of these soldiers returned with an addiction to morphine.  Ã‚   Doctors prescribed medicines with morphine for problems such as female troubles to war wounds. Doctors also prescribed morphine for alcoholism and continued to do so until the 1930s.   The first use of cocaine was in circa 1860. Around this time a German pharmaceutical company, by the name of Merck, first started to produce cocaine for certain drugs to use for the greater good. At first they produced small amounts, only to be used in certain circumstances. But later, they had begun producing larger amounts, word had spread that the company was using this drug. Mercks idea was to use this drug in new products to be given to Civil War Veterans who were suffering from addiction to morphine. By 1880, Merck was producing a little over 1 gram of cocaine a year.  Ã‚   In 1886, John Pemberton created Coca-Cola, a very popular soft drink. Pemberton had intended for his concoction to be used as a tonic for ailments. He based the components of the drink off of cocaine of the coca leaf and caffeine extracts. In 1903, Coca-Cola ingredients were changed, caffeine replaced cocaine.   In 1874, C.R. Alder Wright, an English chemist, synthesized heroin from morphine. Although heroin was found in 1874, it wasnt commercially produced until 1898 by Bayer Pharmaceutical Company. Heroin was made to replace morphine due to morphine abuse, but researchers found that heroin was also addictive.  Ã‚   In the early 1900s, many laws were made to try and prevent drug addictions. In 1914, Congress passed the Harrison Narcotics Act, which controlled opium, coca and their derivatives. The law made it illegal to buy over-the-counter drugs for everything from coughs to toothaches that included those drugs. It also prohibited doctors to prescribe opiates to help addiction.  Ã‚   In 1930, the U.S. Department of Treasury developed the Federal Bureau of Narcotics. The major reasons for the invention of the Federal Bureau of Narcotics was the incompetence and level of depravity within the previous narcotics agencies with the Narcotics Division of the Department of Treasury.  Ã‚   In 1951, the United Nations estimated that there is a total of 200 million marijuana users in the world. The major places are India, North Africa, Egypt, Mexico, and the United States. The Narcotics Control Act was enacted in 1956, it rendered death penalty if recommended by a jury, for the sale of heroin to a minor by an individual over eighteen.  Ã‚   The 1960s brought forth a movement that popularized drug use. The counterculture of the 1960s made marijuana use stylish. Many college-age men and women evolved into political activists and led civil-rights and anti-war movements. Hippies had become more popular among college campuses and led a life with sexual promiscuity and recreational drug use such as marijuana and LSD.  Ã‚   In 1970, President Nixon passed the Controlled Substances Act into law. The CSA models five schedules applied to categorize drugs based on their medical utilization and potential for abuse. Schedule 1 drugs are the most dangerous drugs, such as marijuana, LSD, heroin, and ecstasy. Substances that are less addictive such as cough medications with little codeine are labeled as Schedule 5s. In June 1971, Nixon declared a War on Drugs indicating that drug abuse was public enemy number one.  Ã‚   Nixon drastically increased the presence of federal drug control agencies and nudged through measures such as no-knock warrants and required sentencing. John Ehrlichman, a top Nixon aide, much later admitted: You want to know what this was really all about. The Nixon campaign in 1968, and the Nixon White House after that, had two enemies: the antiwar left and black people. You understand what Im saying. We knew we couldnt make it illegal to be either against the war or black, but by getting the public to associate the hippies with marijuana and blacks with heroin, and then criminalizing both heavily, we could disrupt those communities. We could arrest their leaders, raid their homes, break up their meetings, and vilify them night after night on the evening news. Did we know we were lying about the drugs? Of course we did. In 1972, the commission collectively recommended legalizing the distribution and possession of marijuana for personal use. The Constitution of the United States - 800 Words

The Constitution of the United States took many years of controversy to establish. The final Constitution set up a government based on the system of checks and balances. This Constitution consists of three branches, the Legislative, the Executive, and the Judicial. Powers given to each branch help keep any individual branch from taking over. The first Constitution was called the Articles of Confederation. It was drafted by the Continental Congress in 1776 and approved in 1777 as the American Revolution was in motion. This was not too long after the Declaration of Independence was ratified in 1776, and the Articles of Confederation became ratified 5 years later in 1781, a little before the Battle of Yorktown, which effectively ended the†¦show more content†¦An event in 1787 finally brought these problems to a head. It was Shays’ Rebellion, a rebellion led by a former captain in the Continental army, Daniel Shays of Massachusetts. After risking his life to fight for his country, Shays had come home to his farm, only to find himself in court for nonpayment of debts. Seeing that he was not alone in this injustice, he gathered together a group, made up of mostly farmers and attempted to take over a federal arsenal. Their goal was to Reform the state government. The rebellion lasted nearly a year, and the feder al government did not have the power to stop it. Finally the state militia managed to catch the rebels off guard and the rebellion ended. Shay and many of his followers managed to escape, and eventually they were pardoned. This rebellion made it clear that the federal government had no power, and the Constitutional Convention was arranged. The Constitutional Convention had a total of 55 delegates from every state but Rhode Island. George Washington, originally not planning to go, became unanimously elected the Convention’s president. At first their plan was to refine the Articles of Confederation, but after about a week of debate, they decided to simply write a whole new constitution. The insanity defense extrapolates this argument and allows a man who points a gun at another man, pulls the trigger and kills him to go free if lawyers and psychiatrists can convince the jury that he was insane at the time of the act. Philip Emeagwali Essay Example For Students

Philip Emeagwali Essay Philip Emeagwali a.k.a., calculus programmed a computer to work faster than any other computer in the world, and helped to solve one of the Nations most difficult computing problems: understanding how oil flows underground. As a result of this great triumph, Emeagwali, who gained his doctorate at the University of Michigan, and won the prestigious, Gordon Bell prize for solving the greatest differential equation. This is a great honor awarding the greatest feat in math for the year. As a boy he couldnt even have dreamed of getting his doctorate, much less designing a computer 1,000 times faster than any other computer. He grew up with hardly a cent in Nigeria; he was forced to drop out of school at age 14. Now at age 41, he is the greatest math genius alive. The name of his incredible invention was called the hyperball computer. This computer is 1,000 times faster than ordinary mainframe, or supercomputers, and 1,000,000 times faster than a personal computer. His hyperball computer can manage 3.4 billion computations per second and costs 1 fiftieth of the price to build as a supercomputer. Along with these feats, he has broken many world records including breaking the record for solving the largest partial differential equation. He holds the record for speeding up a computer more than anyone else at 65,536 times. Along with these, he has also broken the record for 20 other extraordinary feats. His incredible computer has been designed for a strange, but very cost cutting reason, it was designed to regulate oil from the field to the tanks. Although it may not seem technological, it is. Emeagwali explains that without his computer, the companies would be losing over 400 million dollars worth of oil. Basically, the computer calculates, and keeps track of all of the oil, without ever missing a drop. The reason of course is because his computer can read the information, and solve it 65,000 times faster than any other. This has helped to solve one of the most serious and wasteful problems for years. Emeagwalis hyperball computer works in no way ever seen; in fact he had to write an eight hundred and sixteen-page report to the US office of Patents and Trademarks. His computer is based on what he calls The Theory of Tessellated Models. It is designed to work like a bees honeycomb. He says that the computer will be more efficient in predicting the worlds weather patterns a century ahead of time, something no other scientist has ever attempted he is often called One of the fastest human beings in the worldHe says that he is surprised how badly things are going in Nigeria, and will do everything he can to help. And he has done just that; he has stopped working and is using sixteen hours a day, 7 days a week to help out his co untry. He admits that his country even has its problems, and that if he went back there he would either go insane from the lack of motivation from the people, or be killed by one of them. Therefore he is in a tough situation. He is creating and funding as many projects and support for the people as needed, he is determined to bring his country of Nigeria up to where the rest of the world is. Emeagwali, who is now worth about 250 million dollars, has a very unique, and perhaps much needed outlook toward life. He believes that a person should raise wealth for his or her country, and not just for themselves. He is currently involved greatly in trying to bring money and food to his fellow Nigerians. He perhaps has a better outlook on their problems, for he grew up trying to live off the meager amounts of pay his father made. He told a reporter that he could never understand the problem unless you had to live through it. However, he also doesnt believe in giving money away. Therefore he has created the project, Africa One. His project is designed to bring fiber optic cables to 41 points on Africas shoreline. He strongly believes that Africans have the ability and resources to make their nation wealthy, all they need is the communication, and some persuasion to get the world to get involved in trade and commerce with Africa. .uab5bb2ab1d9743839d70a882a5f38e53 , .uab5bb2ab1d9743839d70a882a5f38e53 .postImageUrl , .uab5bb2ab1d9743839d70a882a5f38e53 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .uab5bb2ab1d9743839d70a882a5f38e53 , .uab5bb2ab1d9743839d70a882a5f38e53:hover , .uab5bb2ab1d9743839d70a882a5f38e53:visited , .uab5bb2ab1d9743839d70a882a5f38e53:active { border:0!important; } .uab5bb2ab1d9743839d70a882a5f38e53 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .uab5bb2ab1d9743839d70a882a5f38e53 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .uab5bb2ab1d9743839d70a882a5f38e53:active , .uab5bb2ab1d9743839d70a882a5f38e53:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .uab5bb2ab1d9743839d70a882a5f38e53 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .uab5bb2ab1d9743839d70a882a5f38e53 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .uab5bb2ab1d9743839d70a882a5f38e53 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .uab5bb2ab1d9743839d70a882a5f38e53 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .uab5bb2ab1d9743839d70a882a5f38e53:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .uab5bb2ab1d9743839d70a882a5f38e53 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .uab5bb2ab1d9743839d70a882a5f38e53 .uab5bb2ab1d9743839d70a882a5f38e53-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .uab5bb2ab1d9743839d70a882a5f38e53:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: The Changing Face Of Basketball EssayAnother passion of Emeagwalis is to work for peace, and racial equality. Top 10 Percent Graduating Essays - Education In Texas,

Top 10 Percent Graduating Top Ten Percent Graduating top ten percent is a hard road filled with four years of all nighters, study sessions, and countless hours at the library. To graduate with this honor not only brings pride to ones' parents but it also gives the student a special privilege. The top ten percent rule passed in 1997 (House Bill 588) by the 75th legislator automatically accepts these students to any public Texas University. While this may seem like a noble idea on the surface, in retrospect this gives an unfair advantage to the rest of the graduating class. Texas government believes that the top ten percent rule will encourage students to work harder in high school and increase the amount of minorities accepted into a public Texas University. Instead, it works against other hard working students who did not achieve top ten percent status but have other outstanding achievements. I believe that this rule excludes many deserving students and cause parents as well as public school systems to do irrational things t o circumnavigate a well intentioned but poorly thought out bill. This rule should be abolished for the good of the future students. A great deal of hard working students who have made it their goal to attend the University of Texas at Austin are rejected solely on the basis that they are not in the top ten percent of their respected school. In the article ?Student Run Into to Ten Percent Law? published in the Houston Chronicle, a promising 17-year-old student who wanted to follow in his father's footsteps by attending the University of Texas was reject purely on the grounds that he was not in the top ten percent of his class. The rejection letter stated that his ?academic record did not meet the required competitive level?(Nissimov, 1a) but his accomplishments such as maintaining a 3.94 grade point average and scoring a 1240 on his SAT (180 points above the national average) clearly states otherwise. His only draw back was attending a very academically competitive high school. His grade point average would have easily placed him in the top ten percent in many other schools but at the high school he attended, it o nly managed to secure him a spot in the top 30 percent. The top ten percent rule has caused students, parents, and schools to do outrageous things to get students in the top ten percent of their class. In some instances, parents were forced to move out of their home and or illegally place their children into a less competitive and less challenging school by falsifying their address. In the article ?Dumbing Down of the Education Plaguing Texas and the Nation.? By Marc Levin, states that ?There have been reports of parents transferring their children to inferior high schools to give them a better chance of graduating it the top ten percent, thereby receiving automatic admission to UT and A&M. This outgrowth of the top ten percent rule provides a clear example of how leveling can bring an entire educational system down to the lowest common denominator.?(Levin, 2) These students may achieve the top ten percent status but in essence, they sacrifice the better education that they could have received. There have been cases in some schools that h ave squeezed extra student in the top ten percent. At Westlake High School, 63 of the 491 seniors were in the top ten percent, but the math clearly shows us that in actuality that would make it 12.8 percent. ?Ms. Faske, the school's college career counselor, concedes that the school did inflate some student's class rank.?Golden, 1) Another instance was at Lyndon Baines Johnson High School where 15 percent of the seniors managed to with the top ten percent status. The outcome of so many students accepted through the top ten percent automatic admission rule is that there is little room left for regular admission. As a result of this, many students end up in the provisional program offered here at UT Austin. The requirement for acceptance through the provisional program is that students are required to take 12 credit hours in the subjects of mathematics, science, social science, and English. They must pass all of their classes with no incompletes

First or Second Conditional Explained

First or Second Conditional Explained The first and second conditional in English refer to a present or future situation. Generally, the difference between the two forms depends on whether a person believes that a situation is possible or unlikely. Often, the condition or imagined situation is ridiculous or clearly impossible, and in this case, the choice between first or second conditional is easy: We choose the second conditional. Example: Tom currently is a full-time student. If Tom had a full-time job, hed probably work in computer graphics. In this case, Tom is a full-time student so it is obvious that he does NOT have a full-time job. He might have a part-time job, but his studies demand that he concentrates on learning. First or second conditional? Second conditional because it is clearly impossible. In other cases, we speak about a condition that clearly possible, and in this case, choosing between the first or second conditional is easy again: We choose the first conditional. Example: Janice is coming to visit for a week in July.If the weather is good, well go for a hike in the park. Weather is very unpredictable, but its quite possible that the weather will be good in July. First or second conditional? First conditional because the situation is possible. First or Second Conditional Based on Opinion The choice between first or second conditional is often not so clear. Sometimes, we choose the first or second conditional based on our opinion of a situation. In other words, if we feel something or someone can do something, then well choose the first conditional because believe it is a real possibility. Examples: If she studies a lot, she will pass the exam. They will go on holiday if they have the time. On the other hand, if we feel that a situation is not very possible or that a situation is improbable we choose the second conditional. Examples: If she studied harder, she would pass the test. They would go away for a week  if they had the time. Here is another way of looking at this decision. Read the sentences with the speakers unspoken thought expressed in the parentheses. This opinion shows how the speaker decided between the first or second conditional. If she studies a lot, she will pass the exam. (Janes a good student.)If he worked harder, he would pass the exam. (John doesnt take school seriously.)Tom will take some time off next week if his boss says its OK. (Toms boss is a nice guy.)Frank would take some time off next month  if he could get an OK from his supervisor. (Unfortunately, his supervisor isnt very nice and theres a lot of work to be done next month.) As you can see from the examples above, the choice between the first or second conditional can express someones opinion about the situation. Remember that the first conditional is often called the real conditional, whereas the second conditional is often referred to as the unreal conditional. In other words, the real or conditional expresses something the speaker believes could happen, and the unreal or second conditional expresses something that the speaker doesnt believe could happen. Conditional Form Practice and Review To improve your understanding of conditionals, this conditional forms page reviews each of the four forms in detail. To practice conditional form structure, this real and unreal conditional form worksheet provides a quick review and practice exercises, the past conditional worksheet focuses on using the form in the past. Teachers can use this guide on how to teach conditionals  to introduce and practice the first and second conditional forms in class.

The Secret of True Happiness in Life and the Concept of Change and Term Paper

The Secret of True Happiness in Life and the Concept of Change and Self - Term Paper Example The term paper ''The Secret of True Happiness in Life and the Concept of Change and Self'' is aimed at analyzing that there are a lot of new technologies that humans have invented on the basis of the knowledge that the people a 100 years ago had never seen or used. With the evolution of technology, people have become more and more materialistic. Also the term paper describes that everything has changed with time. Even our own thoughts, preferences, likes and dislikes keep changing with time. Just like we never look the same, we never want the same. As children, we live in a world of fantasy. As we grow up, we want to be important and lure ourselves. We want to gain power, money, and love. As children and young adults, we think that money is the solution to every problem, but as we age further, we get to know that money can’t buy happiness. We realize that happiness and satisfaction was never in the things we had always been craving for. Socrates said, â€Å"He is richest who is content with the least, for content is the wealth of nature† (â€Å"Socrates Quotes† 1). The paper suggests if being rich made one happy, no rich person would ever have been unhappy, but we see that it is generally the rich people who become the victims of depression and anxiety. Agreed that money helps us achieve our goals, but our goals may not always be what we really want. It is human nature. All human beings need satisfaction and happiness, and that is in selflessness. The sooner we realize this fundamental secret of life, the sooner we start to live a happy and fulfilling life.

The company was the leading automotive seller for 77 years which is the longest time that any automotive company has dominated the automotive industry (Holstein 2010). However, the company was seriously affected by the 2008 economic crisis which led to it closing three of her brands. Since 2008, the company has been observed to continue declining in terms of revenue earned. The data needed for this research will be collected by analyzing different papers that have been written regarding the strategies written by general motors and also scrutinizing its financial performance from the company annual reports. There are many studies that have been conducted to analyze GM performance.Expected resultsThis has resulted in creation of competition among different brands thus the company ends up sabotaging its own products (Husted & Allen 2011: 49). The structure is also vertically organized which inhibits communication between the top managers and the employees. This has resulted in a lot of labor union problem which has affected the company productivity (Crumm 2010: 267). Dance of Life Essay Example for Free

Dance of Life Essay The painting â€Å"Dance of Life†, created by Edvard Munch in 1900, is a painting that portrays people in different stages of life. It portrays two women who seem sad, a third woman who seems happy, and a bunch of other women dancing with men. The painting implies that life is difficult and that it can be depressing at times, but that it always goes on. The arrangement of the women in a half circle represents the phases of life. The women on the end of the half circle are both standing alone. The woman on the far left stands alone, representing youth, and wears white, representing innocence. The woman on the far right stands alone, representing the loneliness of old age, and she wears black, representing death or loss. The women dancing in the background represent the different phases of life and the enjoyment that can be found in every phase of life. The woman in the center of the painting represents the idea of being out of step with the ‘dance of life’. She wears a red dress, different from all the others. Red represents danger or anger which can be perceived as negative, but by painting her in the center the artist respects her unique position in life and implies that her difference from the rest is a positive quality. The way that others are turned towards her represents how people in society center so much of their lives on attention to others’ decisions. More than half of the painting has a green background representing life and vitality. The top quarter of the painting is a blue body of water that simultaneously represent tranquility. The juxtaposition of these two represents the necessity of having balance in your life. The green, as well as the people dancing, represent the joy to be found in life. Most of life should be joyous, coupled with the tranquility, silence, and reflection represented by the blue and the three girls not dancing. The different colors used in this painting represent all the different aspects in life and how important it is to acknowledge all of them. The artist doesn’t use harsh lines or defined shapes in this painting. All the shapes are smooth and rounded. It really adds to the implication that life flows. The smooth shapes help the painting transition from left to right. The smooth shapes support the half circle shape and it all works together to create a path for the eye to follow. There’s not a large contrast of darkness and light; most of the painting is dark except for one column where the sun is, which casts more light on the girl in white. This gives the idea that there’s more light, more carefree-ness in the youth. The entire painting is two dimensional. Though there are clearly different rows and elements to this painting, the grass, water, and sky all seem to run together in a flat way. This gives the feeling that we are bigger than life; that we are bigger than the problems of the world around us. The painting has three central points of interest; the three women in their different phases of life are set up as the most significant points of the painting. It represents the phases of life and brings to mind the emotions associated with those phases. The young girl in the white dress stands next to flowers which only accentuate the idea of youth and imply that the girl, like the flowers, will still continue to grow. The older woman on the end seems to have a morose, solemn look about her. It implies introspection and reflection on the long life she’s lived. It gives pause to the viewer and causes them to be solemn. One reason the painting conveys its message so well is because of the way the women are set up in contrast to each other. The harmony in the painting is created in the way that the women wear white and the men wear black. It creates a calm background which sets up a better backdrop to set the three women apart. The sun setting over the water creates a smooth backdrop and adds an idea of resignment to the painting; as though it’s okay to accept this ‘dance of life’ as a way of living. Unity is completely achieved in this painting as all of the people have something in common; be it gender, clothing color, or disposition. This is a closed compositional painting and it’s emphasized by the circle closing off at the edges of both paintings. It represents the idea of the circle of life and ensures that every aspect of life is contained in the painting. The lines and structure of this painting seem unintentional. The lines of the grass and the separation between the water and the sky aren’t straight or harsh. They’re smooth and blurred, creating an intentionally casual dynamic. The point of view of the painter is that life is short and that people are happiest in their youth. The older woman seems to have a look of remorse or regret on her face as she stares at the lady in red. The painter seems to be saying that we, as the viewers, should enjoy our youth and live without regrets. It also gives implications about life and the human experience; life is contained in a short circle and passes by quickly. In any phase of life, there are things to be enjoyed and appreciated because life passes by way too quickly. The painter’s view of the world is that there’s good aspects of every part of life. He seems to think that youth is the best part of life and that mistakes are central to life. The way that everyone circles around the woman in red represents that life circles around mistakes and trials but that it’s all surmountable. The painting accurately describes the way that the artist sees the way the life begins and ends; the way that we start as the girl in white—innocent and hopeful and young—and that we end as the lady in black—feeling morose and sad and as though life has slipped away all too suddenly. The way that she looks at the girl in red implies that the painter thinks that in our old age all we have to look back on is the choices we made, the friends we choose to keep, and the happiness that we choose to create. Though this was painted in 1900, it very accurately represents our culture right now. It’s a reminder to seize the day, to live for the moment, to make the most of whatever phase of life you’re in so that you won’t look back at the end of life and regret choices or missed opportunities. This painting causes me to reflect on my life and the decisions that I make. It makes me want to focus more on being happy with the phase of life that I’m in and to appreciate being youthful and carefree. It reinforces the desire to not make decisions that will keep me out of the circle. The painting gives the feeling that life is to be enjoyed, and that no matter what it will keep going.

Inventing the Caribbean: Columbus’s Creation of the Other Essay

Inventing the Caribbean: Columbus’s Creation of the Other Columbus’s invasion of the Caribbean in 1492 brought Native American and European cultures together for the first time in a startling encounter that reshaped the worldviews of both groups. In The Conquest of America: The Question of the Other, Tzvetan Todorov seeks to understand the ways in which the Spanish worldview shaped Columbus’s perception of the natives of Hispaniola, as he fashioned an other from his own sense of self. In Todorov’s model, the other is defined in terms of its correspondence, or lack thereof, to different facets of the self, including culture, language, physiognomy, religion, and knowledge; furthermore, the other is valued, distanced, and understood in relation to the presumed supremacy of the self. In this way, the other can only be seen as an â€Å"imperfect state of oneself† and never as a distinct entity judged according to its own values and defined on its own terms (Todorov 42). Todorov explores Columbusâ€℠¢s letters and journals, various first-hand accounts of the discovery, and the writings of Las Casas in order to understand the ways in which the distinct self of the native population was transformed into an other, whose identity depended on European values to define it. Todorov argues that Columbus’s self (and, consequently, the other, which he created in the image of that self) is defined by three spheres: the divine, nature, and humans. Each of these spheres is integral to Columbus’s worldview and colors his perception of that which is outside his world.
